Hulk, as the movie is officially known as was released in 2003. Directed by Ang Lee and starring Eric Bana as Bruce Banner, Jennifer Connelly as Betty Ross, Sam Elliott as Thunderbolt Ross and Nick Nolte as Bruce’s father David.

The film is an origin story on how Bruce Banner became the Hulk. While performing an experiment, Bruce accidentally exposes himself to a massive amount of Gamma radiation.

Instead of killing him, the radiation gives him the ability to turn into a giant green monster whenever he’s stressed or angry. This leads him into conflict with General Ross and the military, which view him as a threat and David Banner, his father, who has gamma-induced abilities of his own and harbors a dark secret from Bruce’s path.

Different from its counterparts, the movie takes a unique approach to explore the psyche of the Hulk, which gives it a pretty interesting twist.

Critic Reviews

The movie received mixed reviews from the critics, partially due to its failed marketing campaign. The movie was marketed as something for the kids but upon watching, there’s no doubt it is for audiences who appreciate deeper and layered structures in movies. Ang Lee can be accused of being too Shakespearean, but if you are a fan of movies like Batman, then you’d appreciate the darker undertones in the movie.

Seriously, other serious movies like Batman vs Superman look pale in comparison to this one. There are no light moments in the movie and everyone takes their character super seriously. It might not have been a huge box office success at the time it was relieved but it has garnered quite a cult following over the years.

Ang Lee’s Hulk explores the essence of Hulk as a character. It’s a psychological drama inspired by the iconic incredible Hulk #312 issue, which dealt with Bruce Banner’s abusive childhood and repressed memories, which were key to him turning into the Hulk when he was exposed to radiation.

In the comics, it was made clear that the Hulk always inside Bruce’s psyche; the gamma rays only exposed it. All in all, it’s a very hard movie to get if you only expect to see a green monster trashing things around him. But if you seriously want to explore the mysterious character that is the Hulk, you must watch this movie.
